Manikganj, July 25 (V7N)- A woman has gone missing after reportedly jumping into the Padma River from the Comilla ferry while it was en route from Paturia Ghat in Manikganj to Daulatdia Ghat in Rajbari on Saturday (July 25).
The incident occurred at around 6:45 pm.
The missing woman has been identified as Laiju, wife of Forkan Mia, a resident of Ashrafabad Jhauchar in the Kamrangirchar area of Dhaka.
According to Comilla Ferry Master Abdus Sattar, the ferry departed from Paturia Ghat at around 6:30 pm. After crossing a red buoy in the middle of the river, a ferry worker informed him that a female passenger had jumped into the river shortly after speaking on her mobile phone.
Upon receiving the information, the ferry was immediately stopped and a search operation was launched using searchlights. However, the woman could not be located. Preliminary information suggests that she was travelling alone.
Daulatdia Naval Police Outpost Officer-in-Charge (OC) Trinath Saha said fellow passengers reported that the woman suddenly placed her mobile phone inside her bag after a phone conversation before jumping into the Padma River.
He said naval police rushed to the scene after receiving the information and conducted a search operation, but no trace of the missing woman had been found as of Saturday evening.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Assistant General Manager at Daulatdia Ghat, Mohammad Salahuddin, said he had not yet received any official report regarding the incident.
Authorities are continuing efforts to locate the missing woman.
