Rajshahi, Mar (V7N) – A 22-year-old housewife, Afrin Akter Brishti, has allegedly been tortured and murdered by her husband and in-laws in Durgapur, Rajshahi. The family is accused of forcibly administering poison to her mouth.

The incident occurred around 4 p.m. on Friday, March 14, in Anolia village of Durgapur upazila. Afrin's uncle, Nazmul Hussain, reported that his niece called him while he was working in the fields, pleading for help, saying, "Uncle, save me, they are beating me and will poison me." He immediately contacted neighbors, who later found Afrin beaten and left on the ground. Her body was subsequently taken home in a van.

Nazmul Hussain further stated that Afrin married Shahinur Islam in 2021 and had been subjected to torture for money since then. Despite providing funds multiple times, her husband continued to demand money for overseas travel. When Afrin refused, her husband and in-laws allegedly tortured her again on Friday and forced poison into her mouth.

Another uncle of Afrin's alleged that she was frequently tortured, even after they provided money for a motorcycle. Afrin had previously filed a police complaint against her husband, which she later withdrew. They are now demanding a thorough investigation and trial for those responsible.

Durgapur Police Station OC Durul Hoda confirmed that police were dispatched to the scene, and the body has been sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. A case has been registered, with Afrin's father, Aminul Islam, as the plaintiff. "Only after receiving the autopsy report will we be able to confirm whether it was murder or suicide. However, we will conduct a proper investigation," OC Hoda stated.
