Pabna, Mar 24 (V7N)– The Aminpur Police Station in Pabna is facing accusations of wrongful arrest after detaining a local union chairman who his family claims was abroad for his disabled child's medical treatment at the time of the alleged offense.

AM Rafiq Ullah (65), chairman of Puran Bharenga Union Parishad, has been serving in his position since 1997 and is also the president of the union Awami League. His family alleges that he was arrested on false charges.

"Pabna's Aminpur police station has been accused of arresting a person who was abroad for the treatment of a disabled child. The victim's family has demanded his immediate release from the case," a family spokesperson stated.

The family maintains that Rafiq Ullah regularly travels to India for the treatment of his disabled younger son. He reportedly left for India on August 3 of last year and returned on August 17. However, police arrested him on March 11 of this year, accusing him of involvement in a student movement attack on August 4.

"Chairman AM Rafiq Ullah's family claims that his disabled younger son has been ill for a long time. As a result, Rafiq Ullah regularly goes to India for treatment. He went to India for his son's treatment on August 3 last year. After the treatment, he returned to the country on August 17," a family member confirmed.

The family presented Rafiq Ullah's passport, which shows he traveled to India on a medical visa on August 3 and returned on August 11, with Indian immigration stamps. This evidence suggests he was in Delhi at the time of the alleged incident.

"AM Rafiqullah's passport shows that he has been traveling to India on a medical visa for quite some time. He last visited India on August 3. He returned to the country on August 11 after undergoing treatment. The passport has an Indian immigration stamp. His documents show that he was in Delhi at the time of the incident when he was made an accused in the case," a family lawyer stated.

Rafiq Ullah's wife, Kamrunnahar Begum, asserts that her husband is a respected figure in the community and is being targeted due to political motives.

"When her husband went to India on August 3, how did he fight on August 4? How did he become an accused in the case?" Kamrunnahar Begum questioned.

The case against Rafiq Ullah was filed on September 5, a month after the alleged incident, by local resident Robin Mridha. The case involves 62 named accused and 100-150 unnamed individuals.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Parvez Mia, the investigating officer, acknowledged that Rafiq Ullah's name was not in the initial case report and that he was arrested as a suspect. Mia stated that the matter is under investigation and that Rafiq Ullah's name will be omitted from the final report if evidence confirms he was abroad.

"His name is not in the main case report. He has been arrested as a suspected accused. We are investigating the matter. If he is abroad, his name will be omitted from the final report after looking at the information and evidence," SI Parvez Mia stated.

Attempts to contact Robin Mridha, the plaintiff, were unsuccessful.
