Madaripur, Nov 13 (V7N) – Thirteen leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) were critically injured in a cocktail explosion allegedly carried out by Awami League supporters in the Kutubpur area near the Padma Bridge boundary of Shibchar upazila, Madaripur, on Thursday morning.

According to reports, Awami League activists attempted to create unrest by enforcing a lockdown program announced for November 13. When BNP leaders, under the direction of former Upazila BNP Convenor Jaman Molla and led by Upazila BNP Joint Convenor Shajahan Saju, tried to prevent the disruption, the ruling party supporters reportedly threw cocktails, resulting in serious injuries to thirteen BNP members.

The injured include Upazila BNP Joint Convenor Shajahan (Saju) Molla (72), Madaripur District Tanit Dal Joint Convenor Jahangir Hawlader (45), Madarberchar Union Jubo Dal leader Roni Bepari (26), Chhatra Dal leader Imon Bepari (21), along with nine others.

Upon receiving the news, additional police from Shibchar Highway Police Station rushed to the scene to bring the situation under control. The injured were promptly admitted to the Upazila Health Complex for treatment.

The Shibchar Highway Police stated that earlier in the morning, leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League and Jubo League attempted to block the Dhaka–Bhanga Expressway with a sudden rally. They reportedly placed tree trunks on the road to obstruct traffic and set fire to a truck loaded with sugar. Sensing police presence, the Awami League activists fled the scene.

Officer-in-Charge of Shibchar Highway Police, Md. Zahirul Islam, confirmed that the situation has now returned to normal and that patrols by police and other law enforcement agencies have been intensified to maintain law and order.

The incident highlights ongoing political tensions in the region, with confrontations between rival party activists posing serious threats to public safety and local security.
