Rajshahi, Dec 12 (V7N) — The funeral and burial of two-year-old Sajid, who died after falling into an abandoned deep tube well in Tanore, Rajshahi, were completed on Friday morning (December 12) in Koelhat village. The child was laid to rest at the graveyard beside his home.
From early morning, villagers poured into the funeral grounds. Schoolchildren, youths, and the elderly — all were seen in tears, struggling to accept the tragic loss. It appeared as though the entire village came together to bid farewell to the little boy. Everyone prayed for peace for Sajid’s departed soul.
A tragedy that shook a village
On Wednesday afternoon (December 10), Sajid had been walking across a field with his mother and brother when he fell into the hidden hole of an abandoned deep tube well. The field was covered with straw, and Sajid’s mother was unaware that the open pipe lay beneath it. Hearing her child’s sudden scream, she turned back — but Sajid had already disappeared. When the straw was removed, the unprotected deep tube well was exposed.
A massive rescue operation began within an hour of the incident. After 32 hours of continuous efforts, rescuers finally brought Sajid out late Thursday night (December 11). He was immediately taken to the Tanore Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Negligence behind the tragedy
According to locals, a resident had attempted to install a deep tube well at the site last year. After drilling more than 120 feet without finding water, the attempt was abandoned. The pipe was left uncovered and open. Heavy rains last year widened the mouth of the tube well even further.
Residents allege that no precautions, fencing, or protective cover were placed around the abandoned structure, ultimately leading to this heartbreaking accident.
