Mongla, Feb 2 (V7N) — A spotted deer rescued from a residential area in Mongla has been released back into the forest by the Forest Department. The deer was recovered from the Telikhali area with the help of local residents. However, forest officials are investigating whether the deer entered the locality by swimming across the Pashur River or was brought in by poachers.
Assistant Conservator of Forests of the Chandpai Range in the Eastern Sundarbans, Dipon Chandra Das, said that local people spotted a spotted deer roaming around the Telikhali area under Chila Union on Sunday afternoon and immediately informed the Forest Department. Responding to the information, forest officials arrived at the spot the same afternoon and rescued the deer with assistance from villagers. As the animal was found to be in good health, it was later released safely back into the forest.
Local residents claimed that the deer may have crossed the Pashur River at some point on Sunday and entered the Telikhali area, where it was seen running around.
However, forest officials disagreed with this account. Dipon Chandra Das said it is not realistically possible for a deer to cross such a wide river like the Pashur and enter a residential area. He added that the preliminary assumption is that poachers may have captured the deer and later released it after being noticed by people. He said the matter is still under investigation.
Forest officials also noted that similar incidents of deer being recovered from Mongla localities have occurred several times in the past.
