Jhalakathi, Aug. 15 (V7N) — Police conducted a motorcycle patrol in Nalchity upazila of Jhalakathi on Friday as part of heightened security measures ahead of Aug. 15, with four leaders of the banned Awami League arrested during the operation over alleged suspicious activities.
The patrol began at around 4pm under the leadership of Nalchity Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Touhiduzzaman Sohag. Police personnel travelled through key roads and areas of the upazila using several motorcycles and a police pickup vehicle.
Police said four Awami League leaders were arrested during the patrol after they were allegedly found engaging in suspicious activities amid heightened security ahead of Aug. 15.
The arrested individuals were identified as Nazrul Islam Molla, general secretary of the Subidpur Union unit of the Krishak League; Mohammad Shamsul Alam Mallik, 52, general secretary of the Kulakathi Union Awami League; Abdul Malek Molla, 56, general secretary of Ward 2 of the Dapdapia Union Awami League; and Mohammad Jalilur Rahman Akon, 58, publicity secretary of the Nalchity Upazila Awami League.
According to police, Nazrul Islam Molla is a resident of Godonda village in Subidpur Union. Shamsul Alam Mallik lives in Kulakathi village, while Abdul Malek Molla is from the Timirkathi area of Dapdapia Union. Jalilur Rahman Akon is a resident of Nandapara village in Bakerganj upazila of Barishal.
Police said surveillance had been increased across major roads and important locations in Nalchity to prevent sabotage, disorder or other unlawful activities surrounding Aug. 15.
Regular patrols and security operations will continue, police said.
OC Touhiduzzaman Sohag said the motorcycle patrol was part of the police’s heightened security measures to maintain law and order across the upazila.
“Four Awami League leaders were arrested during the patrol over suspicious activities. Necessary legal action will be taken to prevent any attempt to create disorder or carry out unlawful activities,” he said.
