Jhalokathi, Nov 03 (V7N) – The Department of Environment has dismantled an illegal brick kiln in Kathalia upazila of Jhalokathi for operating without environmental clearance, highlighting growing concerns over the environmental damage caused by unregulated brick manufacturing.

A mobile court conducted the operation at KBF Brick Field in Bara Kathalia village of Kathalia Sadar Union on Tuesday afternoon, demolishing the kiln’s chimney and furnace to make the facility completely inoperable.

The operation was led by Sohel Mahmud, assistant director of the Department of Environment in Barishal, and Anjuman Nessa, assistant director of the department’s Jhalokathi district office.

Kathalia Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Sumi Rani Bal, police Sub-Inspector Md Mosharraf Hossain and other officials were also present.

Anjuman Nessa said the kiln’s chimney and furnace were demolished because of the environmental damage caused by its operations. She added that similar enforcement drives would continue.

Brick kilns can place considerable pressure on the environment through emissions, smoke and the extraction of topsoil for brick production. Their operations may contribute to air pollution, damage agricultural land, reduce soil fertility and affect nearby vegetation and public health.

The use of topsoil from fertile farmland can also weaken agricultural productivity, while smoke and fine particles released during brick production can worsen air quality and create health risks for people living nearby.

The Department of Environment's action in Kathalia underscores the need to enforce environmental regulations and prevent brick kilns from operating without the required clearance.

Officials said enforcement operations would continue to address activities that cause environmental harm.
