Sylhet June 13,(V7N)- The Divisional Commissioner (Additional Secretary), Abu Ahmed Siddique, NDC, has addressed the district administrators of Sylhet Division, stressing the importance of preventing illegal sand extraction to protect nature and the environment.

In a seminar titled "Simplifying the Management of Stone Quarries, Sand Pits, and Soil: Stakeholders' Responsibilities," held at the Divisional Commissioner's Conference Room in Sylhet on Wednesday, June 12, Siddique highlighted the need for stringent measures. He stated, "No one should be allowed to harm nature and the environment by illegally extracting sand. Special attention must be given to ensure that sand and stone are not extracted beyond the designated boundaries, causing environmental damage."

The seminar, presided over by Additional Divisional Commissioner (Revenue) Mohammad Rokon Uddin, featured Additional Divisional Commissioner (Overall) Debjit Singh as the special guest. District administrators presented their plans and detailed data on managing stone quarries and sand pits in their respective areas. Government officials from all levels of Sylhet Division, academics, business representatives, civil society members, lawyers, journalists, and environmental activists participated in the event.

Addressing the financial implications, Siddique noted, "Illegal sand extraction deprives the government of revenue. By legally leasing stone quarries and sand pits, the administration can contribute to protecting nature and the environment. This approach also facilitates better monitoring and control of leaseholders, thereby preventing illegal extraction."

Siddique expressed his gratitude for the successful seminar and assured attendees that the recommendations proposed would be incorporated into new regulations concerning the management of stone quarries, sand pits, and soil.
