Dhaka, Oct 05 (V7N): Wahiduddin Mahmud, the adviser to the Ministry of Education, has raised concerns regarding the “unplanned nature” of the country's education system. He pointed out that although universities have been established in various districts, there are not enough job opportunities to match, resulting in a notable rise in educated unemployment.

The adviser made these statements during a discussion held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium to mark World Teachers’ Day.

"The celebration of World Teachers’ Day is a tribute to teachers. I extend my utmost respect to them," he remarked.

He emphasized that he accepted the responsibilities of the Ministry of Education voluntarily, not out of obligation. With a lifelong commitment to teaching, he embraced this role in the interim government.

Wahiduddin Mahmud also addressed the pressing issue of the country’s low revenue collection, which currently falls short of international benchmarks. He noted that this financial limitation restricts adequate investment in crucial sectors such as education, healthcare, and social security. He suggested that reducing corruption in government expenditures could pave the way for increased funding in these sectors, though he acknowledged that meaningful changes would require time.

Further discussing the challenges within the school curriculum, he highlighted the importance of incorporating recent historical movements and nation-building concepts. While he recognized that this integration could not be completed before the next academic year due to the limited timeframe for revising textbooks, he assured that it would be considered in future updates.

The Education Adviser also stressed the need for a comprehensive national education policy and expressed hope that the upcoming elected government would take appropriate measures in this regard. He proposed that each university should develop a code of conduct for students and faculty, allowing institutions to tailor their guidelines based on their specific knowledge and circumstances.

The event was chaired by Dr. Sheikh Abdur Rashid, Senior Secretary of the Ministry, and attended by Dr. Bidhann Ranjan Roy Poddar, Adviser to the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, Professor Dr. S.M.A. Faiz, Chairman of the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, and Dr. Susan Vize, Head of the UNESCO Dhaka Office.
