Dhaka, Jan 21 (V7N) — Sharmin S. Murshid, Advisor to the Ministry of Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs, has criticized political parties for not giving adequate priority to women ahead of the upcoming national elections. She said parties should be held accountable for their inaction.

Speaking at a press conference at the Secretariat on Wednesday (January 21) afternoon, Murshid noted that violence against women has not been fully curbed, but efforts to bring structural reforms have been ongoing over the past one and a half years. She expressed hope that violence against women will decrease if political parties behave responsibly.

The advisor emphasized the importance of the referendum in ensuring the safety of women and the healthy upbringing of children. She added that, so far, the ministry has conveyed information about the referendum to 5.6 million people across the country.

Responding to questions about the absence of the Awami League in the elections, Murshid said that the interim government is not responsible; rather, the party is accountable to the people of Bangladesh for its decision.
