Rajshahi, July 30 (V7N) - Shukdevpur High School, located in Tanore upazila of Rajshahi, continues to suffer from chronic neglect more than three decades after its establishment in 1993. Despite educating around 180 students from grades 6 to 10, the school lacks basic infrastructure, most notably a boundary wall and a usable playground.
On-site observation last Thursday revealed that the school’s lone two-story government-constructed building stands surrounded by a severely damaged and waterlogged field. During the monsoon season, the field remains submerged, while in the dry season, it is riddled with pits and uneven surfaces, making it unusable for sports or outdoor activities.
Students expressed frustration over the condition, saying that their repeated requests to school authorities for field repairs have gone unanswered. They called for immediate renovation to make the space fit for play and recreation.
Acting Headmaster Sukumar Chandra Das said that since its founding, the school has not received any government development grants. He noted that several proposals have been submitted to the education office seeking funds for playground repair and boundary wall construction, but none have been approved. He also cited that without a wall, local farmers frequently use the field as a passage for transporting crops, further degrading the surface.
According to locals, the school was built during the tenure of BNP leader Barrister Aminul Haque, then Minister of State for Establishment. At the time, there were few educational institutions in the region, and the school was a major step forward. However, little to no maintenance has been done since, except for replacing old tin-shed classrooms with the current two-story building.
Nasir Uddin Mithu, chairman of the school’s managing committee and convener of Tanore Upazila Krishak Dal, acknowledged the poor state of the playground. He promised action, saying that a nearby one-bigha pond owned by the school could be excavated to source soil for leveling and restoring the field.
Students, teachers, and local residents are urging authorities to take urgent steps to improve infrastructure and ensure that Shukdevpur High School can offer a healthy and conducive learning environment.
