Dhaka, Sept (V7N) — Women leaders and activists of the Jatiyatabadi Chatra Dal (JCD) staged a human chain in front of the Supreme Court in Dhaka on Wednesday, protesting systemic harassment of female students and demanding an end to hidden political machinations on university campuses.
The demonstration, timed with the upcoming DUCSU student union election campaign, was organized in response to multiple unsettling incidents involving the student group Islami Chatra Shibir. JCD leaders accused Shibir of engaging in covert politics under the protection of high-ranking university officials—specifically, the vice‑chancellor and proctor of Dhaka University. They claimed Shibir members have hidden their identities while engaging in cyberbullying and issuing rape threats to female students. One such threat was made against a woman who filed a writ challenging the eligibility of a Shibir-backed candidate in the DUCSU election.
At the human chain, JCD President Rakibul Islam denounced the long-standing dominance of Shibir under the banner of the ruling party’s student wing. “For nearly 15 and a half years, Shibir has operated in secrecy, targeting ordinary students and Chatra Dal members while masquerading under another symbol,” he said. “We will resist their unseen political influence—both on campus and in public spaces.”
General Secretary Nasir Uddin highlighted the severity of threats faced by female students. “A Shibir-linked candidate in the DUCSU election, supported by Chatra League, threatened a female activist who had filed a writ petition,” he said. “We protest not only the DV’s threat, but ongoing cyberbullying and physical intimidation targeting women across the country.”
The JCD women’s wing emphasized the chilling impact of these threats on female participation in student politics. They demanded decisive action from university authorities to ensure safe and equitable participation for all students.
