Rajshahi, Oct 11 (V7N) — Tension has erupted at Rajshahi University following allegations that students’ personal information was leaked ahead of the upcoming Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU), hall union, and senate representative elections.
The left-leaning student alliance, Democratic Students’ Council, made the allegation at a press conference held on Friday afternoon, accusing the university administration of unauthorizedly sharing student data with rival student groups.
Present at the press conference were Fuad Ratul, vice-presidential candidate; Kawsar Ahmed, general secretary candidate; and Nasim Sarkar, assistant general secretary candidate.
The speakers claimed that both the university and hall administrations had provided personal phone numbers of students to panels backed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) student wing, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), and Islami Chhatra Shibir, a student organization linked to Jamaat-e-Islami. As a result, students reportedly began receiving campaign messages and promotional calls on their phones and WhatsApp accounts from third-party websites.
Terming the incident a “serious breach of privacy and cyber security,” the Democratic Students’ Council strongly condemned the data leak and presented several demands. They called on the university administration to take full responsibility for the unauthorized release of student information, to initiate disciplinary action against those involved, and to establish an effective cyber cell to ensure student data protection and online safety.
University officials were unavailable for immediate comment when contacted. However, campus sources said an internal review might be initiated if evidence supports the claims.
The RUCSU election, long suspended for decades, has generated intense political activity across the campus, with multiple student organizations preparing to contest after years of dormancy.
