Sylhet, Dec 16 (V7N) – Sweets were distributed in Sylhet on Sunday evening to mark the transfer of Omar Faruk, a powerful instructor of the Sylhet Government Technical Training Centre (TTC), who had served at the institution for nearly 18 years.

The sweets were distributed in the Garden Tower area by the Sylhet Citizens’ Rights Council, led by its convener Tofayel Ahmed Khan, among individuals who claimed to be victims of harassment as well as passersby and local shopkeepers. The event drew significant public attention, with pedestrians and market traders gathering to take part.

Members of civil society expressed satisfaction over what they described as the removal of a Sylhet-hostile and politically influential individual aligned with the Awami League, stating that the decision brought a sense of relief among conscious citizens of the city.

According to official sources, Omar Faruk, who served as an Instructor (Computer Operation) at Sylhet TTC since November 17, 2008, was transferred to Netrokona TTC through an office order issued by the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) on December 11, 2025. The transfer order, issued under memorandum number 49.010000.002.19.001.20(2340), was made effective immediately on December 14, 2025, following approval by BMET Assistant Director (Administration) Md Masud Anam in the public interest.

Sources allege that despite an earlier transfer order issued in 2022, Omar Faruk managed to retain his position at Sylhet TTC through the involvement of a section of dishonest officials within BMET, allegedly in exchange for a large sum of money. It is also claimed that during the previous Awami League government, he used political influence, including recommendations from local members of parliament and ministers, to remain posted at the same institution for nearly two decades.

Local sources further allege that prolonged tenure at Sylhet TTC enabled the formation of a powerful syndicate involving certain officials and employees in and around the institution. Complaints against Omar Faruk include corruption, abusive behavior toward local residents, mocking of the Sylheti regional dialect, and making derogatory remarks about the character of both local and foreign male and female trainees.

It has also been alleged that Omar Faruk maintained a close relationship with the current principal of Sylhet TTC, Sheikh Mohammad Nahid Niaz, and that the two exercised unchecked dominance over the institution for an extended period.

Following the transfer, members of Sylhet’s conscious community said the decision restored a sense of accountability and relief, expressing hope that the move would help improve transparency and the working environment at the Sylhet Technical Training Centre.
