Rajshahi, Dec 19 (V7N) – Salahuddin Ammar, General Secretary of the Rajshahi University Central Student Council (RUCSU ), has issued a public ultimatum demanding the resignation of six Awami League-aligned deans, whose two-year terms officially ended on December 17. The deans’ tenure had been extended by Vice-Chancellor Professor Saleh Hasan Naqib until new elections could be held, prompting the student leader’s protest.

Ammar posted on Facebook on Thursday afternoon setting a deadline for their resignation, warning that he would take further action if the deans remained in office. On Friday, he reportedly cautioned the deans directly, stating that he would “explain the rest” if they did not comply.

The deans in question are Abu Naser Md. Wahid (Faculty of Law), Nasima Akhter (Faculty of Science), A.S.M. Kamruzzaman (Faculty of Business Studies), S.M. Ekram Ullah (Faculty of Social Sciences), Bimal Kumar Pramanik (Faculty of Engineering), and A.H.M. Selim Reza (Faculty of Geology). They assert that according to university ordinances, deans continue in their roles until new elections are conducted and do not have the authority to resign unilaterally.

Professor S.M. Ekram Ullah emphasized that the Vice-Chancellor had assigned them to remain in their posts until the next elections. He noted that personally, he does not wish to continue but must follow administrative directives. A.S.M. Kamruzzaman echoed that resignation rights lie with the Vice-Chancellor and that extensions of tenure are not unusual, citing similar measures during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Acting Registrar Professor Iftikharul Alam Masud explained that organizing elections between the recent convocation and upcoming January admissions would be difficult. He assured that new elections would be scheduled before the national student council elections.

The situation highlights ongoing tensions between the student council and administration over governance, tenure, and political alignment within the university.
