Dhaka, Jan 09 (V7N) - The administration of Dhaka University has referred the demand to rename two residential halls and three other campus buildings currently bearing the Sheikh family’s names to the university Senate, without taking any decision at the Syndicate level.
On Thursday, the university’s highest decision-making forum, the Syndicate, decided to forward the issue to the Senate during its meeting, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Niaz Ahmed Khan. Acting Registrar Munshi Shams Uddin Ahmed confirmed the development.
The Syndicate considered the request from the central student council (DUCSU) to rename two residential halls, a hostel, and two residential areas, but chose not to make a final decision. “The matter falls entirely under the Senate’s authority. The Syndicate discussed the students’ demands and referred the proposal for Senate consideration. The final decision will be made there,” he said.
Previously, on August 27, the Syndicate had renamed ‘ Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall’ to simply ‘Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi Hall,’ sending the matter to the Senate for final approval. The hall administration subsequently issued a notification reflecting the change.
On December 21, DUCSU leaders staged a protest outside the Vice-Chancellor’s office demanding the renaming of five campus buildings associated with the Sheikh family. These include Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall, Athlete Sultana Kamal Hostel (named after Sheikh Kamal’s wife), Sheikh Russel Tower (staff residence), and Bangabandhu Tower (employees’ residence).
Students had proposed renaming Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall after Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall after Captain Sitara Begum. The university administration has yet to make a decision, leaving the issue pending before the Senate.
