Mumbai, Sep 04 (V7N) — The release of the much-anticipated film Emergency, based on the life of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has encountered further delays due to ongoing legal challenges. The makers of the film, including its producer and lead actress Kangana Ranaut, are now forced to wait longer before the movie can hit the screens.
The filmmakers had recently approached the Bombay High Court, seeking to expedite the release of the film by requesting the court to direct the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to issue a release certificate. However, the court declined to issue any such order on Wednesday, citing the need to adhere to instructions previously given by the Madhya Pradesh High Court regarding the film.
The Bombay High Court acknowledged the concerns raised by the Sikh community about the film’s portrayal of historical events, particularly in relation to the Sikh community. These concerns led to a legal case being filed by the Sikh Sangat of Jabalpur and Shri Guru Singh Sabha in the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The court directed the CBFC to address the objections before granting the film a release certificate.
Despite the filmmakers' appeal, the Bombay High Court upheld the Madhya Pradesh High Court's directive, stating that it could not issue conflicting orders. However, the Bombay High Court did instruct the CBFC to finalize its decision on the release of Emergency within the next two weeks, by September 18, 2024, keeping in mind the significant financial investment made in the production of the film.
Emergency, directed and produced by Kangana Ranaut, who also portrays Indira Gandhi, was initially slated for release this Friday. However, the film has faced controversy, particularly from the Sikh community, who have expressed concerns about its historical accuracy and potential to incite unrest. The film’s content has sparked significant debate, leading to legal actions that have now delayed its release.
Kangana Ranaut, known for her outspoken nature, remains undeterred by the setbacks. Following the court's decision, her 'Team' X (formerly Twitter) handle commented, "CBFC reprimanded by High Court for illegally withholding Emergency certificate," signaling her continued defiance and determination to see the film released.
For now, the fate of Emergency remains uncertain, with the next two weeks being crucial in determining whether the film will be allowed to proceed to theatres or face further delays.
