Dhaka, Jan 19 (V7N)—A writ petition has been filed in the High Court seeking the abolition of the term "Father of the Nation."

The petition was submitted on Sunday to the High Court bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury.

The petition was filed in the public interest by Arifur Rahman Murad Bhuiyan, a resident of Narsingdi.

Speaking to journalists, the petitioner said: "No single individual can liberate a country. Therefore, in a country where 93% of the population is Muslim, the term 'Father of the Nation' should be replaced with an accurate list of the founding fathers of independent Bangladesh.

"This includes abolishing Article 4(A) of the Constitution, presenting the true history of the Liberation War in the media and textbooks, forming a commission to punish those who distort the history of the Liberation War, and clearly documenting the role of the anti-discrimination student movement in the July uprising that led to the fall of the authoritarian Awami League government.

"The writ petition has been filed in the public interest to achieve these directives."
