Pirojpur, Oct 25 (V7N)- Freedom fighter Manik Pashari, the complainant in a 1971 crimes against humanity case against late Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee, was buried at his home around 2am on Saturday night after a day of tension surrounding his burial in Pirojpur.

Tension reportedly began on Saturday afternoon over arrangements for his burial and the provision of a guard of honour in recognition of his status as a freedom fighter. Local Jamaat leaders and supporters allegedly opposed the arrangements, leading to a standoff.

Amid security concerns, the administration eventually arranged the guard of honour with limited publicity. Pashari’s body was also kept in administrative custody for security reasons, according to the information provided.

Preparations for the burial, including digging the grave, began at his home around 11:30pm.

Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Pirojpur Sadar Police Station, said the situation had been brought under control and the burial was completed at around 2am.

On August 12, 2009, Pashari filed a case at Pirojpur Police Station against five people, including Sayedee, over alleged crimes against humanity committed during Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War. The case was later incorporated into the main case against Sayedee before the International Crimes Tribunal.

Following Pashari’s death on Saturday, disputes reportedly arose over his burial and post-mortem procedures, with local Jamaat leaders accused of obstructing the process.

The incident prompted heightened tension in the area before the administration completed the burial under security arrangements.
