Dhaka, March 25, (V7N) – Bangladesh has completed preparations for a possible high-level meeting between Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the 6th BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, scheduled for April 3-4.
Foreign Secretary Md. Jashim Uddin confirmed at a media briefing that Dhaka is ready for the meeting and is awaiting a positive response from India.
"Considering the current context of our bilateral relations with India, we view this meeting as crucial. If it takes place, it could help overcome the existing stalemate in our ties," Uddin said.
Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently informed a parliamentary panel in New Delhi that India was reviewing Dhaka’s request for a bilateral discussion between Yunus and Modi.
The 6th BIMSTEC Summit, which will be held from April 2 to 4, will see Bangladesh assume the chairmanship of the regional forum for the next two years.
Chief Adviser Yunus is scheduled to arrive in Bangkok on April 3 and will deliver a keynote speech at the BIMSTEC Young Generation Forum on the same day. The main summit session with heads of government will take place on April 4.
The summit will cover key issues including trade expansion, regional connectivity, energy cooperation, security, poverty alleviation, disaster response, and pandemic preparedness. Leaders are expected to issue a joint declaration at the end of the summit.
Bangladesh views this BIMSTEC Summit as a strategic opportunity to strengthen regional partnerships and project itself as a key player in South and Southeast Asian cooperation.
