Arakan Army abducts three Bangladeshi fishermen from Naf River

Dhaka, May 12 (V7N) –Myanmar’s armed rebel group Arakan Army (AA) has abducted three Bangladeshi fishermen after opening fire in the Naf River along the Leda border in Hnila union of Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.

The incident occurred around noon on Monday, when the fishermen were captured from the Naf River near Bangladesh’s Leda border.

Nurul said: “Three fishermen from my area, who went to fish in the Naf River, were held at gunpoint and abducted by the Arakan Army. When they went fishing at noon, members of the Arakan Army spotted them and opened fire. They then chased them down and took them away. The families of the three fishermen are in great distress following the incident.”

Local fisherman Mahiuddin from Lamarpura, East Leda, said: “The three Bangladeshi fishermen were fishing in the Naf River in a boat. Around noon, the Arakan Army suddenly arrived from the Myanmar side and started firing. They then chased and captured the fishermen, taking them away along with their boat. Other fishermen nearby managed to escape.”

When contacted, Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sheikh Ehshan Uddin said: “We have heard the news of the abduction of the three fishermen. We are currently looking into the matter.”
