SANGSAD BHABAN, June 22, (V7N) — The government has launched several nationwide initiatives, including in Brahmanbaria district, to curb rumours and misinformation spread via online media and social networking sites, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon told Parliament today.

Responding to a tabled question from ruling party MP Md. Abdul Mannan (Brahmanbaria-5), Swapon detailed the measures being taken to fight disinformation and promote responsible digital use. The session was chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram.

Swapon said a dedicated Rumour Prevention and Fact-Checking Committee operates 24/7 at the Press Information Department headquarters. The committee quickly verifies claims and issues official statements and rebuttals to public and private media whenever false or misleading content appears on social media.

He added that regional information offices under the Press Information Department are also tracking online news portals and social media activity in their areas. “These offices work alongside the headquarters to identify and address misinformation at the local level,” he said.

To boost public awareness, the department’s Feature Wing regularly produces special articles and reports on tackling misinformation, cyber harassment, and malicious propaganda. “These materials are published in national dailies and online news portals to educate citizens and encourage responsible digital engagement,” the minister said.
