SANGSAD BHABAN, June 22,  (V7N) — Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood told Parliament today that the government has launched several initiatives to further improve and ensure reliable, uninterrupted electricity services nationwide.

Replying to a written question from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Md Moktar Ali (Jashore-6), the minister said the government is committed to providing dependable and quality power to all consumers.

“The present government is firmly committed to making electricity services across the country more advanced, uninterrupted and reliable,” he said.

Iqbal Hassan Mahmood noted that power sector development is a priority in the government’s election manifesto. “To ensure improved and uninterrupted electricity supply, the government has formulated a 180-day action plan and is implementing it with utmost priority,” he said.

He added that a separate plan has been adopted to expand power generation from renewable sources.

Outlining key initiatives, the minister said Bangladesh aims to meet 20% of total electricity demand from renewables by 2030 and 30% by 2040 under the Renewable Energy Policy. “We have already set a target of achieving 10,000 megawatts of solar power generation capacity,” he said.

Under the National Rooftop Solar Programme, rooftop solar systems are being installed on government offices, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities.

The government has also issued the “Guidelines for Development of Renewable Energy Projects on Land Owned by Government Agencies under the PPP Model, 2026” and the “Policy for Increasing Private Sector Participation in Renewable Energy-Based Power Generation, 2025.”

Alongside boosting generation, the minister said the government is modernizing transmission and distribution networks. “Measures have been taken to install prepaid meters to prevent wastage and illegal use of electricity,” he said.

He added that old distribution lines and substations are under regular maintenance, while new lines and substations are being built across the country. Initiatives are also underway to cut system loss in electricity distribution.
