Dhaka, Oct 6 (V7N) – Bangladesh's Barrister Jahrat Adib Chowdhury, MP, has been elected to the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), strengthening the country's representation in the global parliamentary body.

Chowdhury, chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, secured a majority of votes in the election held yesterday at the 153rd IPU Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania, according to a foreign ministry press release. She was elected from the Asia-Pacific Geopolitical Group, with representatives of the group's 37 member countries participating in the election.

The foreign ministry described the result as another significant achievement for Bangladesh under the present BNP-led government, following the country's election to the presidency of the 81st United Nations General Assembly. It said the election reflected international confidence in the government's commitment to strengthening parliamentary democracy and was expected to enhance Bangladesh's voice in international parliamentary affairs.

The IPU is the global organisation of national parliaments. It promotes democratic governance, peace, sustainable development, parliamentary diplomacy and cooperation. A Bangladesh parliamentary delegation led by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, is attending the assembly.

The election of a Bangladeshi MP to the IPU Executive Committee is seen as a recognition of the country's growing engagement in international parliamentary affairs. Bangladesh has been actively participating in IPU activities, including efforts to promote peace, sustainable development, and parliamentary diplomacy. The country's recent election to the UNGA presidency further underscores its increasing role in global governance.
