Mujibul Haque Chunnu, the chief whip for the opposition and secretary general of the Jatiya Party, warned in Parliament on Thursday that the nation would collapse if the government did not take harsh action against anomalies and corruption in the banking sector.

The opposition lawmaker asked Sheikh Hasina, the prime minister, to be firm and enforce strict measures to rein in such anomalies.


Chunnu made this statement during an impromptu debate in Parliament.

Chunnu stated that the financial irregularities of the public university total Tk 1,300 crore, citing news sources from several media. The National University was the site of the majority of the anomalies.

"The country will empty if the government does not handle them firmly."

According to Chunnu, banks are already empty.

He stated, "Undoubtedly, over- and under-invoicing has been the method used."

Who is in charge of taking care of these? Where are we going? If relevant ministries, such as those in charge of finance and trade, neglect to take care of these...

Chunnu claimed that Bangladesh Bank has not investigated these anomalies in any way.

"Banks are being used as a conduit for money laundering, as noted in Bangladesh Bank's report. How have they fared thus far? Why was it that the commercial banks eluded the Bangladesh Bank's control? Are they ignorant of the cost of any item?

"Don't they (BB) know whether under invoice or over invoicing is taking place?" Chunnu vehemently criticized the Bangladesh Bank.

The JP MP also brought up the sad incident of a young boy dying at a metropolitan hospital after circumcision.

He urged the PM to take greater measures to deal with all of these.

"We have nowhere to go if the government does not become tough. He went on, "I hope the government would carefully regulate them and take measures in this area.
