Dhaka, Dec 31 (V7N) —Nurul Haque Nur, president of the Gono Odhikar Parishad, has said the constitution, having been amended 17 times, does not need to be abolished but can be revised again through discussions with all stakeholders.

His recommendation came on Tuesday during a press conference at the party's office in Al Razi Complex, Purana Paltan, Dhaka.

It was announced at the conference that the two factions of the Gono Odhikar Parishad have decided to unify and work together.

At the press conference, party leaders discussed the current political situation in the country.

They declared their decision to forget past differences and work together to build a new Bangladesh.

Nur said: “A nation gains independence only once. The comparison between 1971 and 2024 is not valid.”

He further said: “The government must fully support those injured during the quota movement and the July uprising. We have already observed various weaknesses of the government. Law and order has not yet improved. Awami high-command members are fleeing, and the Secretariat fire deeply concerns us.”

Nur also commented that the chief adviser’s initiative to make the declaration of the July uprising inclusive has saved the nation from division.

He said: “Unity is essential for building a new Bangladesh in the future. Any rash decision in this situation will push the country backwards. The country must be governed based on unity and solidarity to protect the nation.”

Meanwhile, Gono Odhikar Parishad General Secretary Md Rashed Khan said: “The declaration of the mass uprising must be made based on national unity, including all parties, organizations, and stakeholders. This mass uprising belongs to the 180 million people of this country. There will be no politics in this country without the people.”

The party’s Joint General Secretary Hasan Al Mamun said: “Those excluded from the 43rd BCS must be gazetted. During Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, BNP-Jamaat affiliates faced gazette delays due to political affiliations. Unfortunately, this is happening under the interim government as well, which is deeply regrettable.”

Faruk Hasan, one of the organizers of the 2018 quota movement, said: “The Gono Odhikar Parishad emerged from the collective efforts of the youth during the quota movement. However, due to some differences, the party had been operating separately. Yet, both factions played a significant role in the streets during the 2024 revolution. Today, Gono Odhikar Parishad has decided to unify.”
