Dhaka, Jan 25 (V7N) — BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman stated that the party would welcome the formation of a new political party if it aims to establish democratic rights. However, he emphasised the need for transparency and expressed disappointment if the state or administration were to assist in such endeavours. He made these remarks during the National Teachers' Day and Teachers' Rally held on Saturday.
Addressing the current political landscape, Tarique Rahman criticised what he described as the "fugitive dictatorship," accusing it of undermining constitutional institutions, including the Liberation War's legacy, the Election Commission, and the Anti-Corruption Commission. He acknowledged the interim government's constitutional reforms, noting BNP's agreement with most measures, barring two procedural issues.
Rahman addressed the issue of rising commodity prices, urging the government to dismantle market syndicates to alleviate the burden on the public. "Why is VAT being imposed on the people, and why hasn't this government destroyed the market syndicate?" he questioned, suggesting that the administration's focus on other matters has left commodity prices unchecked. Despite the government's limitations, he stressed the need to prevent its failure.
Discussing the formation of a new political party, Rahman reiterated BNP's support for initiatives that promote democratic rights. However, he warned against state or administrative backing for such ventures, as well as vindictive or divisive actions toward existing political parties. "The youth are the future and will lead the way forward, but this must be done transparently," he added.
Rahman urged BNP supporters to remain vigilant against conspiracies targeting the party's activities. He also called for mutual patience between the government and the public, stating, "If the people can accept the government's failure for the greater good, the government should also accept criticism patiently."
The BNP leader concluded by reiterating the party's commitment to reforms and elections, positioning BNP as a pro-democracy force amid the nation's evolving political dynamics.
