Dhaka, Feb 18 (V7N) –BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said while the party is not against reforms, it wants the government to hold elections soon.
Fakhrul made the statement in his address as chief guest at a rally organized by Jessore BNP at the district's Town Hall field on Tuesday afternoon. The rally was arranged to protest the rising prices of essential commodities and the deterioration of law and order, demand a roadmap for quick elections, and resist the conspiracies of fascism.

He said any necessary reforms or changes for the election should be made. “We are not against reforms, but hold the elections quickly.”

“We know that in the name of elections, an incident like 1/11 occurred. Moeen Uddin and Fakhruddin tried to seize power by talking about good governance and reforms. But in the end, they had to leave,” he added.

Fakhrul continued: “We all respect and honour Dr Muhammad Yunus. He is truly a source of pride for Bangladesh. He won the Nobel Prize. World leaders, economists, and reformists hold him in high regard, and so do we. That is why when you (the government) took office, we were reassured, thinking you would restore people's rights swiftly. We still hope that you will arrange an election as soon as possible.”

He strongly opposed holding local government elections before the national elections, saying: “The people will not accept this. If you want to stay in power, resign and come [to power] through elections. Do not think about holding onto power while staying in office. Please arrange a free and fair election.”

Fakhrul also said: “The fascist has fled, but are we safe? No, we are still not safe. We have no security for our lives or property. You have all seen 'Aynaghor.’ Who created it? That fascist Hasina did.”
