Dhaka, Jun 03 (V7N) – Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed optimism about regaining its political party registration and traditional "scales" election symbol following a favorable verdict from the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.

On Monday afternoon, a six-member delegation from Jamaat, led by Assistant Secretary General AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad, met with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin to discuss the implementation of the verdict. The party leaders urged the Election Commission (EC) to swiftly restore their registration and symbol status.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Azad said, “The Election Commission has responded positively and assured us that they will implement the court’s verdict expeditiously, following the due administrative process. The whole country is watching. Crores of people's emotions and political rights are tied to this.”

Azad emphasized that the verdict restores Jamaat's political rights. “This is not a favour. It is our legal right. We won parliamentary seats using the scale symbol in 2008. We had both registration and symbol before 2013,” he added.

The Jamaat delegation also included Assistant Secretary General Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Jobayer, Publicity Secretary Advocate Matiur Rahman Akand, Executive Council Member Mubarak Hossain, Bangladesh Lawyers Council President Advocate Jasim Uddin Sarkar, and Advocate Shishir Munir.

The meeting followed a landmark ruling on Sunday morning, when the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division overturned the 2013 High Court verdict that had declared Jamaat’s registration with the Election Commission illegal. The court also directed the EC to address the issue of Jamaat’s electoral symbol.

The EC is now expected to review and process the restoration of Jamaat’s registration and symbol, potentially reopening the path for the party to contest future national elections.
