DHAKA, April 15, (V7N) – The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has expressed concern over growing ambiguity surrounding the timeline for the next national elections, saying the uncertainty appears to be increasing with time.

BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed told BSS today that a party delegation, led by Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, will meet the Chief Adviser of the interim government at 12 noon tomorrow at the State Guest House Jamuna to seek clarification.

“The topic of this meeting is different from previous ones. This time, our focus is squarely on the elections. In our last meeting, the Chief Adviser assured us that elections would be held between December and June. We trusted that timeframe, as 18 months is sufficient for reforms and organizing a free and fair election,” said Ahmed.

He noted that while the Chief Adviser had promised to coordinate with the Election Commission and present a clear roadmap, no such initiative has been observed yet.

Adding to the uncertainty, Ahmed cited statements from various government advisers suggesting the interim government might remain in place for five years. “Even the Chief Adviser’s press secretary mentioned the December–June timeframe. This inconsistency has created confusion.”

“We will seek a definitive statement from the Chief Adviser regarding the election date and urge him to announce a clear roadmap,” he said.

When asked if other issues might be discussed, Ahmed responded that the BNP also wants clarity on the nature of proposed reforms. “The Chief Adviser has spoken of ‘small’ or ‘big’ reforms. BNP is also engaged in talks with the National Consensus Commission on this issue. But reform discussions should not be used as a reason to delay the roadmap.”
