Dhaka, Apr 16 (V7N) – Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has urged for the 13th National Parliament election to be held before the month of Ramadan in 2026, citing concerns over natural disasters and unfavorable conditions in June. He conveyed this position to a visiting US delegation during a meeting held today at the residence of the US Deputy Head of Mission in Dhaka.
Dr. Rahman stated that the party is willing to place trust in Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s assurances regarding timely elections but emphasized the necessity of holding them well ahead of Ramadan to ensure stability and participation.
During the meeting, the US delegation questioned Jamaat-e-Islami on several key governance areas, including economic policy, foreign affairs, women’s rights, and the party’s vision for democracy if it were to come to power. Dr. Rahman claimed that Jamaat’s commitment to democratic values and institutional reform was made clear during the discussion.
He also said that the issue of conducting a transparent trial of Awami League leaders allegedly involved in genocide was raised in the meeting.
The dialogue with Jamaat-e-Islami began at 2:00 PM, followed by a meeting with the National Citizens Party (NCP). Later, at 4:00 PM, a delegation from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, arrived at the same venue to meet with the US delegation as part of ongoing discussions with key political stakeholders in Bangladesh.
