Dhaka, May 13 (V7N) — Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has traveled to Bangkok for urgent eye surgery. He departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 2:45 a.m. early Tuesday aboard a Thai Airways flight. His wife, Rahat Ara Begum, is accompanying him on the trip.
According to BNP’s media cell member Shayrul Kabir Khan, the veteran politician is scheduled to undergo retinal surgery at Rutnin Eye Hospital in the Thai capital. The decision was made following a sudden deterioration in his eye condition on Monday.
Mirza Fakhrul was initially taken to United Hospital in Dhaka’s Gulshan area after complaining of eye-related complications. After assessment, doctors recommended immediate specialized treatment abroad, prompting the urgent journey to Bangkok.
“The surgery is medically necessary and could not be delayed,” Khan said in a statement to V7N, emphasizing the need for rapid intervention to preserve the BNP leader’s vision.
Though the exact nature of his condition has not been disclosed in detail, party sources confirmed that the issue involves the retina—an area of the eye where damage can lead to serious or permanent vision impairment if left untreated.
Mirza Fakhrul, 76, has had recurring health challenges over the past few years, often requiring specialized treatment both at home and abroad. His latest trip comes at a politically sensitive time in Bangladesh, with the BNP continuing to voice opposition to the interim government and demand new elections.
There has been no announcement yet about how long he is expected to remain in Bangkok or whether any party activities will be postponed in his absence. However, party leaders have expressed hope for a swift and successful recovery.
