Dhaka, Sept 6 (V7N) – Violent clashes broke out on Friday evening at the central office of the Jatiya Party (JaPa) in Dhaka’s Paltan area after a section of agitated protesters stormed the premises, vandalized property, and set fire to several rooms. Police later intervened with water cannons and sound grenades to disperse the crowd, escalating tensions in the area.

Rezaul Islam Bhuiyan, Presidium Member of the Jatiya Party, told Voice7 News that unidentified attackers had set fire to the party office, describing the incident as an example of “undemocratic mob politics.” Witnesses reported that angry demonstrators broke furniture, smashed windows, and lit fires inside different sections of the building.

As the blaze spread, police rushed to the scene, leading to heated confrontations with the protesters. In an attempt to bring the situation under control, law enforcement fired sound grenades and used high-pressure water cannons. The crackdown, however, further inflamed the protesters, who became more aggressive and retaliated against security forces.

The unrest followed a solidarity rally held earlier in the evening near the National Museum at Shahbagh. Leaders and activists of Ganadhikar Parishad, led by its president Nurul Haque Nur, had staged the gathering to demand the resignation of the Home Affairs Adviser, holding him responsible for a recent police attack on Nur. Their three-point demand also included accountability for the incident and protection of political activists’ rights.

After the rally, the demonstrators marched toward Paltan to join their central office. It was at this stage that violence erupted at the Jatiya Party headquarters.

As of the latest reports, police managed to push back the protesters by firing sound grenades, forcing them to scatter into nearby streets. Many demonstrators regrouped and occupied parts of Bijoynagar’s main road, where they continued to confront law enforcement.

Authorities have since taken control of the Jatiya Party office, securing the compound to prevent further vandalism or arson. No immediate information was available on casualties, though several protesters were reportedly injured during the clashes.

The situation remains tense in the capital, with political analysts warning of further confrontations as opposition groups continue to voice grievances against the government and its advisers.
