Dhaka, Dec 31 (V7N) — Leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) from various districts have begun their journey to Dhaka to participate in the Janazah (funeral prayer) of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. Departures started after noon on Tuesday, December 30, with party members using buses, trains, launches, and private vehicles to reach the capital.

Many supporters began traveling immediately after learning about Khaleda Zia’s death. The number of travelers increased steadily throughout the afternoon, with some departing in overnight buses, while others arrived via river routes from districts such as Bhola, Barisal, and Chandpur. Trains from multiple districts heading to Dhaka have also seen heavy attendance of BNP supporters. Supporters from districts surrounding Dhaka are expected to join the procession on Manik Mia Avenue on Wednesday morning, December 31.

On the ground, a somber mood prevails among party members and citizens following the news of Khaleda Zia’s passing. Party offices across the country have raised black flags, and a sense of grief and emptiness is evident in these offices.

The Janazah will be held on Wednesday, December 31, at 2:00 pm at the National Parliament premises and Manik Mia Avenue. The Khatib of the National Mosque, Baitul Mukarram, will lead the funeral prayer. Following the Janazah, Begum Khaleda Zia will be buried with state honors beside the tomb of her late husband, former President Ziaur Rahman.

Begum Khaleda Zia passed away at 6:00 am on Tuesday, December 30, at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka at the age of 80. Her eldest son and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, along with other close family members, were present at the hospital at the time of her death.

The massive turnout of supporters from across the country reflects her enduring influence and the deep respect she commanded among the people of Bangladesh.
