Porto, July 3 (V7N) – Portugal kept their World Cup campaign alive with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Croatia in a dramatic Round of 32 encounter, sealing progression after a tense and emotionally charged match.
Croatia started strongly, pressing high and creating early chances, but Portugal gradually settled into rhythm through controlled possession and quick attacking transitions. The match remained tightly contested, with both sides showing intensity in midfield battles and defensive organisation.
The breakthrough moment arrived in a high-pressure situation when Portugal were awarded a penalty after a Croatian defender brought down a Portuguese attacker inside the box. Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up and calmly converted from the spot in the 68th minute, striking the ball down the centre to bring Portugal level and shift momentum.
The goal marked Ronaldo’s first-ever World Cup knockout-stage strike and his 11th overall World Cup goal. It was also his third goal of the tournament, following two earlier efforts in the group stage.
After the equaliser, Portugal pushed forward with renewed confidence and increased attacking urgency. Their persistence paid off as they completed the comeback with a decisive second goal, putting Croatia under pressure in the closing stages.
Despite late Croatian attempts to respond, Portugal’s defence held firm under pressure to secure the 2–1 victory and confirm their place in the next round.
The win added another milestone to Cristiano Ronaldo’s historic World Cup journey, as the 41-year-old continues his record sixth appearance in the tournament and remains a decisive figure for his national team in crucial moments.
