Global, Oct 17 (V7N) Microsoft will no longer provide software updates, security patches, or technical support for the Windows 10 operating system, leaving computers running this OS vulnerable to cyberattacks from Tuesday, October 14. The company has advised users to upgrade to Windows 11 to ensure continued protection and performance.

Microsoft confirmed that personal users can upgrade to Windows 11 for free on compatible devices, though older models may not support the new system. While Windows 10 computers will continue to operate, the lack of updates and security support increases significant cybersecurity risks.

For users in Europe, Microsoft offers an Extended Security Update (ESU) program, allowing Windows 10 devices to receive security updates until October 2026. However, this program does not provide new features or technical assistance. Outside Europe, personal users can access ESU only if their device runs the latest Windows 10 version, has a Microsoft account, and completed backups. Otherwise, the cost is $30 per device. For commercial organizations, the cost is $61 per device, with slight regional variations.

According to Microsoft, Windows operating systems are currently used on approximately 1.4 billion computers worldwide, with around 43 percent still running Windows 10. In the United Kingdom, over two million people continue to use Windows 10, according to consumer watchdog Which.

A recent Microsoft survey found that nearly a quarter of users plan to continue using the unsupported OS, while one in seven is preparing to purchase a new computer. Consumer organizations warn that Microsoft’s decision could increase unnecessary spending and electronic waste.

Nathan Proctor, Senior Director at U.S.-based consumer rights group PIRG, said, “Ending support for Windows 10 poses risks for both consumers and the environment. We need technology that is sustainable and long-lasting.”

The end of Windows 10 support marks a significant transition for millions of users worldwide, highlighting the importance of timely upgrades and cybersecurity awareness in an increasingly digital world.
