Tangail, July 9 (V7N)- Aklima Begum (42), the wife of a van driver, allegedly died due to medical negligence during a gallstone operation at Mukta Clinic and Hospital in Tangail.

The incident led to vandalism at the hospital by the patient's relatives.

On the afternoon of July 6, Aklima Begum, from Dhulbari village in Hugra Union of Tangail Sadar Upazila, was admitted to Mukta Clinic in Tangail municipal town due to abdominal pain.

After examinations, the clinic authorities confirmed the presence of gallstones in her abdomen.

On July 7, under the supervision of Dr. Farid Ahmed, Aklima Begum was sent to the operation theater for surgery.

When the patient did not regain consciousness even six hours after the operation, the relatives became suspicious.

When inquired, Dr. Farid informed the relatives that the patient had a stroke on the operating table and needed to be referred. The patient was then referred to Enam Medical in Dhaka the same day, according to the relatives.

The deceased Aklima’s husband said, "I cannot afford the treatment costs at Enam Medical. Despite this, they forced us to send her there. Upon arrival at Enam, they admitted the patient to the ICU."

Later, on Tuesday, July 9, Enam Medical authorities declared the patient dead.

The relatives claim that the patient had already died at Mukta Clinic, and the rest was staged.

"We demand exemplary punishment for Dr. Farid," said the relatives.

Dr. Farid could not be reached for comment over the phone.

Angry relatives vandalized the clinic, but the situation was brought under control after the police and Sadar Upazila Chairman Tofazzal Hossain Tofa arrived and assured the relatives of fair justice.

Sadar Upazila Chairman Tofazzal Hossain Tofa said that a meeting with the clinic authorities will be held after Esha prayers on Wednesday, July 10, to discuss the matter.
