WASHINGTON, Nov 21, (V7N) – An effort by Democratic senators to block the Biden administration’s $20 billion arms sale to Israel failed in the Senate on Wednesday evening. The initiative, spearheaded by Senator Bernie Sanders, aimed to halt US weapon shipments over concerns regarding Israel's military campaign in Gaza.

Sanders accused the US of "complicity" in what he called human rights atrocities, warning that continued unconditional support for Israel undermines US credibility globally. “You cannot condemn Russia, China, or Iran for human rights abuses while funding the starvation of children in Gaza,” he said during the debate.

Despite the impassioned plea, three resolutions of disapproval introduced by Sanders failed, securing support from only about 20 senators in the 100-member chamber. The majority of Democrats joined all Republicans in rejecting the measures.

Republican Senator Mitch McConnell defended US military aid to Israel, asserting that withholding assistance would embolden groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. The Biden administration, while urging Israel to exercise restraint, has maintained steadfast support for its military efforts.

Rising Civilian Toll

The war, which began after Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, has resulted in significant civilian casualties on both sides. Israeli officials report 1,206 deaths, primarily civilians, while the Gaza health ministry, overseen by Hamas, lists a staggering 43,985 fatalities, a figure the United Nations deems credible.

The failure of the Senate motion highlights the deep divisions within the US government over the handling of aid to Israel amid the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
