GRINDAVIK, Iceland, Nov 21, (V7N) – A volcano erupted late Wednesday on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwest Iceland, marking the seventh eruption in the region since December.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) confirmed the eruption occurred at the Sundhnuksgigar volcanic fissure near Grindavik, a small fishing town, at 2314 GMT.

Dramatic live footage captured lava gushing from a long fissure, illuminating the dark Icelandic landscape.

Although no infrastructure is currently at risk, Grindavik is being evacuated as a precaution, IMO specialist Benedikt Ofeigsson told public radio RAS2.

Seismic Activity on the Rise

The eruption follows years of heightened seismic activity on the peninsula, known for its geothermal activity and volcanic systems. Iceland, which sits atop the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, is home to 33 active volcanoes, making it one of the most volcanically active regions in the world.

Residents and authorities remain on high alert as experts monitor the situation closely.
