BERLIN, Jan 5, (V7N) – Severe winter conditions, including snow and black ice, forced the cancellation of dozens of flights at Germany's major airports on Sunday, creating widespread travel disruptions.
At Frankfurt Airport, the country’s largest, 120 out of 1,990 flights were canceled. Runways required continuous clearing, and the process of de-icing aircraft became more complex due to freezing temperatures. Poor visibility further compounded the challenges, airport officials told reporters.
In Munich, Germany’s second-largest airport, 35 flights were canceled as a precaution on Saturday evening. Similarly, disruptions began at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport on Friday, where 30 flights were affected by icy conditions.
The German Meteorological Office has warned of freezing rain following overnight snowfall, advising passengers to avoid non-essential travel.
Travelers are urged to check their flight status and stay updated with airlines as wintry conditions are expected to persist across the country.
