BANGKOK, March 5, (V7N) — Bangkok Airways has announced the suspension of flights between Bangkok and Mae Hong Son for over a month due to dangerously poor visibility caused by air pollution, an airline official confirmed Wednesday.
The seasonal air pollution crisis in northern Thailand, primarily caused by crop burning, worsens between December and April. The high levels of smog have made it difficult for aircraft to land safely in Mae Hong Son, a popular tourist destination.
"Smog affects vision and the safety of the airlines," stated Mae Hong Son airport officials, confirming that flights would be suspended from March 15 to April 20.
According to IQ Air data, Mae Hong Son’s air pollution levels are currently 7.9 times higher than the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended limits, making it one of the worst-affected areas in Thailand.
The Thai government has banned crop burning and warned violators of fines and legal consequences. However, the effectiveness of these measures remains uncertain.
In response to the Bangkok Airways flight suspension, the Department of National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has been directed to provide regular updates to restore confidence among businesses and travelers.
Air pollution has become a major public health crisis in Thailand, with millions requiring medical treatment each year due to respiratory and cardiovascular issues linked to hazardous air quality.
