Kuala Lumpur, Oct 27 (V7N) – U.S. President Donald Trump has begun a six-day tour of Asia, attending the 47th ASEAN Summit in Malaysia and actively overseeing key trade agreements and a Thailand-Cambodia peace pact.

President Donald Trump arrived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Sunday to participate in the 47th ASEAN Summit. Beyond attending the summit, he directly oversaw discussions on the summit’s agenda, trade agreements, and a renewed Thailand-Cambodia ceasefire pact. Upon arrival, Trump walked the red carpet and danced with local artists. His visit, however, sparked protests as demonstrators criticized him for Israel’s attacks on Gaza.

The primary goal of Trump’s Asia tour is to reduce trade tensions with countries in the region. According to Reuters, next week he will attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in South Korea, where he is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping to ease U.S.-China trade tensions. The discussion will focus on a potential trade deal, particularly in response to U.S. threats of 100% tariffs on Chinese products due to Beijing’s export controls on rare minerals.

During the ASEAN Summit, the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia signed an extended ceasefire agreement in the presence of Trump. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet formalized the pact, which builds on a ceasefire agreed three months ago, aiming for permanent peace. Trump had previously mediated to end a five-day conflict between the two countries in July. East Timor was also formally admitted as an ASEAN member during the summit.

Separately, U.S. and Chinese delegations held preparatory talks to prevent further escalation of trade tensions ahead of the Trump-Xi meeting in South Korea. Trump told reporters, “I believe we are going to make a deal with China,” while Chinese officials confirmed that preliminary consensus had been reached. Within hours of arriving in Malaysia, Trump finalized trade agreements involving Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Cambodia, including a critical pact concerning rare minerals. The White House stated that these agreements will enhance market access for exporters across the participating countries.

Trump also assured rapid resolution of ongoing conflicts between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Speaking on regional border disputes, he praised Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir as “great leaders,” noting that his administration had ended eight conflicts in just eight months and intends to quickly address this issue.

Following the ASEAN Summit, Trump will travel to Tokyo, Japan, to meet Japan’s first female Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, and Emperor Naruhito. He will also meet Japanese business leaders and U.S. military personnel stationed in the country. On October 29, Trump will attend the APEC Summit in South Korea and meet President Yoon Jae-myung, with a highly anticipated meeting with President Xi Jinping planned during the event.
