Paris, Jul 14 (V7N)- Ukraine is set to purchase 16 Rafale fighter jets from France as part of efforts to strengthen its air defense capabilities amid the ongoing war with Russia.
French President Emmanuel Macron said the fighter aircraft will be gradually integrated into the Ukrainian Air Force between 2028 and 2029.
Along with supplying the advanced fighter jets, France has also decided to transfer key defense technologies to Ukraine. As part of the agreement, Kyiv has been granted permission to manufacture several weapons systems used with Rafale aircraft inside Ukraine.
This marks the first time Ukraine has received a license from France to produce advanced military equipment domestically.
Under the agreement, Ukraine will be able to manufacture AASM air-to-ground guided bombs, Aster air defense interceptor missiles, and Scalp long-range cruise missiles at its own facilities.
Defense analysts say the move represents a significant step for Ukraine in reducing its dependence on foreign weapons supplies and developing a stronger domestic defense industry over the long term.
France has also announced plans to provide Ukraine with advanced radar systems and the highly capable SAMP/T air defense system, which can intercept ballistic missiles, fighter aircraft and drones.
Analysts believe the French assistance will significantly enhance Ukraine's air defense capabilities while deepening military cooperation between European countries.
The latest defense partnership could play an important role in shaping the future trajectory of the Russia-Ukraine war as Kyiv continues efforts to modernize its armed forces.
