Sikkim, 18 June 2024 — The Indian Army's Border Roads Organization (BRO) has successfully rescued tourists stranded in Sikkim due to heavy rains and landslides. This region, nestled in the Himalayas and renowned for its natural beauty, was severely impacted by natural disasters starting from June 12.

Sikkim, known as the paradise of flowers, attracts large numbers of local and foreign tourists. However, the recent heavy rains triggered landslides, blocking most roads and leaving many tourists from places like Kolkata stranded. Tragically, about ten people lost their lives due to the landslides.

The BRO, renowned for its resilience and dedication, stepped in to assist the stranded tourists. Despite the extreme weather conditions, the BRO soldiers worked tirelessly day and night to clear the blocked roads and ensure the safe passage of tourists. Their successful efforts have earned them widespread praise and admiration from the rescued tourists, who celebrated their saviors by chanting "Jai BRO."

The region, which includes Sikkim, Bhutan, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and parts of West Bengal and North Bengal, has faced severe weather conditions in both 2023 and 2024, leading to repeated destruction and disruptions. Landslides have often resulted in road closures, making travel hazardous for tourists seeking to enjoy the region's mountainous and forested landscapes.

While the natural beauty of the Himalayas continues to attract adventurous tourists, the recurring natural disasters highlight the challenges and dangers of traveling in these areas during the monsoon season. The efforts of the BRO have been crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of those caught in such adverse conditions, showcasing the organization's vital role in disaster response and road maintenance in these remote regions.
