Washington D.C., July 8, 2024 – The legitimacy of US President Joe Biden's participation in the upcoming presidential election has come under scrutiny following his loss in the first debate against former President Donald Trump. Amid growing concerns about his mental and physical fitness, Biden has faced increasing pressure to withdraw from the race.
In an interview with ABC News, President Biden insisted that his leadership does not require any cognitive tests. "I'm tested -- I have a full neurological exam with me every day," Biden stated, adding, "I was at Walter Reed [National Military Medical Center] for my physical. Every day is a test for me."
ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos pressed Biden about the growing concern surrounding the 81-year-old president's condition. When asked if he had undergone a 'full neurological and cognitive evaluation,' Biden gave an incoherent response. He also mentioned that no one had told him he needed such a test.
When asked whether he would voluntarily undergo a cognitive test and release the results to the public, Biden responded, "Look. I have a cognitive test every day. I do everything. You know, I don't just run campaigns, I run the world. No - and this is not high-sounding like hyperbole, but we are the indispensable nation of the world."
Last Friday, 168 influential figures, including major donors and academics of the Democratic Party, sent a letter to President Biden urging him to withdraw from the next election. The Washington Post reported that the signatories argued that such action was necessary "in the interests of our democracy and the future of our nation."
Despite mounting criticism and pressure, Biden has repeatedly vowed to seek re-election, dismissing fears of being dropped from the race.
As the debate over Biden's fitness for office continues, the president remains resolute in his decision to run for re-election. The situation has sparked significant discussion and concern among both supporters and critics, highlighting the contentious nature of the upcoming election.
