UN Headquarters, New York, Sep 26 (V7N) - Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, on Wednesday emphasized the need for bolstering economic and trade ties with Nepal. The call came during a meeting with Nepalese Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Discussions between the two leaders focused on expanding cooperation in the energy sector, enhancing trade, and promoting stronger people-to-people interactions between the two neighboring South Asian countries.

Professor Yunus highlighted the significant potential for energy trade between Bangladesh and Nepal, acknowledging Nepal's abundant renewable energy resources. He pointed out that harnessing this potential would serve the interests of both nations, particularly as Bangladesh seeks to diversify its energy imports.

Bangladesh is expected to formalize a 40-megawatt power purchase agreement with Nepal next month, a significant step towards deepening energy cooperation. Nepalese officials present at the meeting assured that the country will be in a position to increase electricity exports in the coming years as its renewable energy capacity grows.

Energy and Power Adviser Fouzul Kabir Khan and Senior Secretary and SDG Affairs Coordinator Lamiya Morshed also attended the meeting, underscoring the importance of the discussions in shaping future bilateral engagements.

This meeting marks a renewed commitment by both Bangladesh and Nepal to strengthen their economic ties and build on the shared goal of regional prosperity.
