Roma snatched a 1-1 draw at Feyenoord thanks to a shoulder goal by Romelu Lukaku in the first leg of their Europa League playoff on Thursday. The Belgian striker scored his 21st goal in 18 games in the competition after Igor Paixao had given the hosts a late first-half lead.
In other games, Argentine veterans Mauro Icardi and Angel di Maria scored dramatic winners for their teams. Icardi netted in stoppage time to give Galatasaray a 3-2 victory over Sparta Prague, who had equalized twice. Di Maria converted his second penalty deep into added time to seal a 2-1 win for Benfica over Toulouse.
AC Milan cruised to a 3-0 win over Rennes with Ruben Loftus-Cheek heading in two goals and Rafael Leao adding a third. Marseille were denied a rare win by Shakhtar Donetsk, who scored in the dying minutes to earn a 2-2 draw. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Iliman Ndiaye were on target for the French side.
Ajax avoided a shock defeat to Bodo/Glimt by scoring two goals in injury time. The Norwegian side were leading 2-0 with Albert Groenbaek’s brace, but Branco van den Boomen’s penalty and Steven Berghuis’ strike salvaged a 2-2 draw for the four-time European champions.
The second legs of the playoffs will be played next week, with the winners joining the eight seeded teams in the last 16.
