Struggling French Ligue 1 club Rennes has appointed Jorge Sampaoli as their new head coach, following the dismissal of Julien Stéphan last week. The 64-year-old Argentine, known for his past managerial stints with Argentina, Chile, Marseille, and Sevilla, replaces Stéphan after Rennes' disappointing start to the season.
Rennes is currently sitting 13th in the Ligue 1 standings, with just three wins from 11 matches. The club also missed out on European qualification last year for the first time in seven seasons. Sampaoli, who was present to watch Rennes' home defeat to Toulouse on Sunday, will be tasked with revitalizing the team and leading them to better performances in the league.
In the club's statement, executive chairman Arnaud Pouille expressed enthusiasm about Sampaoli's appointment, highlighting his professionalism, humanism, and strong connections with players and staff. Pouille emphasized the need for Sampaoli's energy and leadership to help Rennes regain momentum and face competition with determination.
