Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham is considering retirement after his 20th season at the helm, with the decision expected to be made after the Utes' final game against UCF on Friday. Whittingham, 65, stated that his choice will be guided by what is best for the program, not his personal interests. Utah has had a challenging first season in the Big 12, currently sitting at 4-7 overall and 1-7 in conference play.

This marks just the third losing season in Whittingham's tenure, alongside 2012 and 2013. Throughout his career, Whittingham has amassed a 166-86 record, with seven seasons of 10 or more wins. The school had already planned for the future, announcing that defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley would succeed Whittingham when the time comes. Whittingham emphasized that Scalley will be involved in future decisions, as he is the coach-in-waiting.

While Whittingham has not indicated a decision based on this season's struggles, he acknowledged the difficulty of choosing the perfect time to retire, noting that very few coaches get to end their careers on their own terms.
